Buchanan on Immigration
Pat Buchanan believes strongly in protecting the borders of the United States through immigration reform. For those immigrants who are already in this country, Buchanan believes it is necessary to educate them in the social, cultural and moral standards identified with life in the United States. Here's a brief statement by Buchanan on the question of immigration -- both legal and illegal.
During the 45 years leading up to the Immigration Act of 1965, 10 million immigrants came to the United States, and by and large assimilated successfully into American culture. They fought for us in four wars, built our factories, enriched our culture, and helped make the United States the mightiest industrial empire on earth.
But the onset of mass immigration in the 1960s overwhelmed the great American melting pot. Cultural institutions already under assault by liberals who de spise our heritage were unable to as similate the 30 million immigrants who flooded into the U.S. over the past three decades. Ex ploding statistics, swamped social services, and the rise of ethnic militancy tell the sad story.
This year, 1.3 million more immigrants will pour into the U.S. -- 400,000 of them illegal aliens. If America is to survive as "one nation," we must take an immigration "time out" to mend the melting pot.
As President, I will:
• Halt illegal immigration by securing our porous borders and strengthening internal enforcement.
• Stand with the three-in-four Amer icans who agree that mass legal immigration must be reduced by restoring the 20th century average of 250,000 to 300,000 immigrants per year.
• Support a national campaign of as similation to teach newly adopted Americans our culture, history, traditions and English language. To do otherwise cripples American cohesion and keeps the newest members of the American family from full participation.
The major media are announcing in shocked tones:
"Pat Buchanan supports the views of the America First Committee that opposed the United States going to war in Europe prior to World War II."
The media announces this with the expectation that millions of Americans will be absolutely horrified to learn that fact and that they will rush out to vote against Buchanan.
Actually most Americans today have never even heard of the America First Committee.
Recognizing this, the media then rushes to advise Americans that, of all things, the America First Committee didn't think that it was necessary for the United States to go to war against Adolf Hitler and that Adolf Hitler would have somehow over-run the world and gassed not only millions of Jews but Americans and Brits and Latin Americans and blacks and Aborigines and all sorts of other people.
This announcement is thus supposed to seal Pat Buchanan's fate with the American electorate. However, What the modern-day media fails to tell Americans is this:
As late as the morning of Dec. 7, 1941 -- up to the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor (which, of course, was in the Pacific, rather than in Europe if the geography books are correct), polls showed that some 85 to 95 percent of the American people were opposed to U.S. involvement in the war in Europe.
The AFC itself was strictly non-partisan and its 850,000 dues-paying members came from both the ranks of the "right" and the "left." Famed "liberal" writers such as Sinclair Lewis, John T. Flynn and Oswald Garrison Villard -- certainly not "Nazi sympathizers" by any means -- were among the supporters of the AFC.
In the Ivy League, a young Harvard student named John F. Kennedy made a $100 contribution to the AFC, encouraging them to keep up their "good work." Over at Yale, a young football coach named Gerald Ford was an early supporter of the AFC.
Both Kennedy and Ford later became presidents of the United States, yet those who are criticizing Pat Buchanan for echoing the views of the AFC have not suggested that Kennedy and Ford were somehow "pro-Hitler" or "indifferent to Hitler" as Buchanan's critics are suggesting.
Some big name military figures were also supporters of the AFC. Most prominent among them was, of course, Col. Charles A. Lindbergh, but General Robert T. Wood and General Hugh "Iron Pants" Johnson were among the outspoken proponents of the AFC in the public arena, Wood actually serving as AFC chairman. Famed flying ace Eddie Rick enbacker was also an AFC supporter -- no "Nazi" either.
A number of prominent American women, including Alice Roosevelt Longworth, daughter of no less than former President Theodore Roosevelt, and novelist Kathleen Norris, one of the most popular writers of her day, were also major figures in the AFC.
The list of big names (and small names, too) supporting the work of the AFC could fill a book, but the names cited here prove beyond any question that support for AFC and its goals was eminently pro-American and not somehow subversive as the modern-day media would have Americans believe.
What follows is a list of the addresses and telephone numbers for those who are organizing the Buchanan for President efforts in those states where officially-recognized affiliates have been established. Also included is the address and telephone number for the official national office of the Buchanan campaign. If an affiliate hasn't been organized in your state, check with the national office to see what you can do on behalf of Pat's candidacy.
