Federal agents made history on Feb. 13 by seizing a Baptist church in Indianapolis for not withholding income and Social Security taxes. Here, U.S. marshals remove Rev. Gregory Dixon Sr. on a gurney. Richard Ham mar, an attorney and expert on churches and tax law, said never before had the government seized a church for failing to pay taxes. "I can't believe this is happening," said the Rev. Wiley Drake, pastor of First Southern Baptist Church in Buena Park, Calif. who was present when the Indianapolis Baptist Temple was seized. "I can't believe that [Attorney General John] Ashcroft is doing this on his watch. He had every legal right to stop that." Ashcroft is the son of a Pentecostal minister.
